Tech Companies Can’t Find Good Employees and It’s Their Own Fault
Doubling down on hiring practices that don’t work usually still doesn’t work
We can all agree that talented employees are the fuel of every good technology company, right?
Let me explain how those tech companies have treated those employees — their fuel — over the last couple years.
Imagine, if you will, your average tech company as a gas-powered vehicle. Yeah, a shiny Ford Mustang convertible with the company logo, let’s say “Google,” splashed across the hood, cruising the highway with the top down, fueled by the “gasoline” of its employees.
Now let’s say the company sees the environmental signs and decides they’ve got so much engine power to spare that they can convert the vehicle to a hybrid. They do this, and while the acceleration is a little slower, the fuel efficiency goes way up — which means less gasoline/employees needed — and everyone applauds them for their foresight.
The tech company laps up this applause and thinks — why not go all electric? So they ditch the internal combustion engine altogether — along with the need for gasoline/employees — and go all in on battery power, based on the promise of a free charging station on every corner.
